Will Lifting Weights Make Women Big?
Will lifting weights make women big or bulky? This is still a question and concern for a lot of females, although its been answered time and time again, some gym rat convinces a skinny-fat girl not to lift and instead of lifting weights she’s Googling “Will lifting weights will make me look big?”
Honey child—NO. The answer is NO.
There are tons of reasons as to why, but let’s get this straight—Mikey at the gym is a bag of lies. Here’s why.
Women Don’t Have Enough Anabolic Hormones to Get Big
Women don’t have the hormones necessary to get huge. In addition, women have estrogen that dilutes the muscles ability to get as big as men. Estrogen fights the bulk.
If that doesn’t do it for you—think about the guy you know that works out every single day and while he looks fit—he doesn’t seem to be getting BIGGER….and he’s equipped with the anabolic hormones that DO allow him to bulk. Think about all those men in the gym you might see—do you see them getting super big or super cut? It’s likely the latter. Men have to work REALLY hard to bulk—imagine how much harder you’d have to work to get this bulk you’re afraid of getting?
Women Gain Weight Every Year
If you’re afraid of getting big, how about getting fat? Women gain about .5-1 pound per year of fat. FAT. EVERY YEAR. In addition, women lose 5 pounds of muscle every decade. After menopause, that number DOUBLES. Guess what that does to the metabolism? Drops it by nearly 3 percent every decade.
Think about a sack of potatoes—it’s got a decent weight when you lift it up, right? Think about five pounds of muscle lost. That’s A LOT. Muscle doesn’t just look good or add strength, it burns calories. You’re gaining fat and losing muscle.
Aerobics Won’t Get You The Best Results
Most women will turn to aerobics to lose weight and that’s great, but that shouldn’t be the only thing we’re focusing on here.
Weight training increases strength, power, it enhances cardiovascular health, and fights off bone loss, too.
Weight training prevents fat increases and reduces abdominal fat which is linked to other health concerns.
Aerobic exercise is great for your heart and your endurance, but your body needs weight to improve other areas, too.
If this isn’t enough, how about this statement straight from the American College of Sports Medicine, “Strength training can help make everyday activities easier, such as picking up the kids, carrying groceries, or working on household projects.”
Do you want to be the stereotype woman good for picking up kids, going grocery shopping and working on, eh hem, ‘household projects’. Seriously ACSM—did you mean to write ‘laundry’?

You do cardio to ‘lose weight’.
You don’t want to look ‘big’ or ‘bulky’ because…..you’re concerned with your appearance.

Weight Lifting Will Make You Lose Weight and Gain Confidence
We know it’s a myth, so don’t let it be your excuse. Weightlifting is proven to increase weight loss, lean mass and overall health. You’ll increase your strength and stand taller with confidence because you look good –on the inside and out.
So how do you get started? Easy. Don’t talk to Mikey from the gym.
You can even do resistance training at home, if you want.
Plan to weight train AT LEAST 3 times per week.
Target body areas like upper body, core or legs. Make sure you’re working out with weights for a good 30 minutes. You can achieve this by doing 10-15 reps with 4 sets and about 7-8 exercises. Check out our blog—we have a bunch with exercises.
Throw in cardio before or after for some good balance.
