What is Velositol?
Been inspecting your post-workout label and saw Velositol as an ingredient? Did your curiosity fire get lit? Well, we’re here to give it a little kindling.
Velositol, created by Nutrition 21, was the result of curious minds, too.
The question was –how can protein be more effective at stimulating muscle protein synthesis?
The answer: Velositol. In fact, it nearly doubles the rate of protein synthesis according to a study conducted. We’ll get to that.
But first, let’s start with the basics.
Insulin Impacts Muscle Protein Synthesis
Insulin stimulates muscle protein synthesis in the presence of whole protein and/or essential amino acids. Insulin has minimal impact on MPS when amino acids are in lower concentration in the blood.
If you didn’t know insulin played a big role in your big biceps, you do now. That’s what led to the creation of Velositol. It has an insulinogenic function that increases amino acid uptake when coupled with protein/amino acids.
This forces insulin to cross over to stimulating muscle protein synthesis. It sees amino acids are flourishing so it begins directing MPS to repair, rebuild and recover.
So, what is it exactly?
Velositol Combines Two Unique Ingredients to Boost MPS
Velositol is a patented combination of amylopectin polysaccharide and a modified release of chromium. When it is used in conjunction with protein, it increases the rate of muscle protein synthesis.
Protein can increase muscle protein synthesis on its own, but the creators of Velositol don’t believe in limits. So they broke them. They did this by figuring out how to increase the uptake of amino acids so insulin had more to work with when deciding whether to trigger muscle protein synthesis. They started with focusing on the interaction of insulin with protein and the consequential MPS.
After reviewing studies, they found chromium can result in greater insulin sensitivity. Additionally, amylopectin, a water soluble polysaccharide and polymer of glucose, is considered a complex carbohydrate. Consuming carbohydrates that are quickly digested spikes insulin response. Once insulin responds, what the body has in it determines what signals it sends off. Since chromium has a sensitizing effect on insulin, when paired, the body takes control of insulin, if you will because it stimulates insulin response with the carbohydrate and when paired with protein and chromium, provides enough protein/amino acids to trigger muscle protein synthesis.
So, after their theories and science, they had Velositol tested by the people in white lab coats.
Studies Show Velositol Nearly Doubles the Rate of Muscle Protein Synthesis
Guess what? Research showed adding Velositol to even a suboptimal dose of 6 grams of whey protein nearly doubled the rate of MPS.
Velositol, when added to protein:
- Significantly boosts MPS by nearly double (48%).
- Promotes rebuilding, repairing and recovery after training.
- Increases lean mass.
