What is the MIND Diet?
The MIND diet—it’s ranked in the top diets by US News, but is it another fad diet certain to fade away like the pounds you might lose? Well, given that the diet is focused more on brain-healthy foods, you might be surprised.
The goal of this diet is to keep the pounds on—your brain, that is. The MIND diet was created to prevent Alzheimer’s disease through food choice.
The MIND Diet Basics
In fact, the name is a combination of the two: Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND).
Both of these diets are for people who want to eat healthy but not restrict themselves. They are both proven to improve health and help with weight loss. So, indirectly, the MIND diet can help you lose weight while protecting your melon.
The MIND Diet Food Groups:
The MIND diet focuses on 10 brain-boosting food groups:
- Green Leafy Veggies
- Whole Grains
- Olive Oil
The MIND diet avoids:
- Red meats
- Sweet Junk
- Fried/Fast Food
Is the MIND Diet Effective?
The National Institute of Aging funded a study in 2015. The results of studying Seniors showed that around 16 percent of people on regular diets developed Alzheimer’s disease. The MIND diet reduced the risk for Alzheimer’s by around 35 percent who followed the diet moderately and reduced it by 53 percent for those who adhered strictly to it.
Science shows eating two servings of veggies a day, including 6 green leafy veggies per week slows the decline of the mind. The diet mostly has people consuming three servings of whole grains with a salad and veggie—and sipping a glass of wine. Throw in some fish, poultry, nuts and berries and you’re on a diet, believe it or not.
Like most diets, you should limit unhealthy foods.
- 5 or fewer servings of sweets per week.
- 4 or fewer servings of red meats per week.
- Less than a servings per week of cheese and/or fried foods.
The best part—there is no calorie counting.
It’s convenient, doesn’t require that you download an app, follow specific recipes or not go out to eat.
You’ll lose weight while improving your body and brain health.
