What is the Flat Belly Diet
If there was ever a diet name that sounds like magic, the Flat Belly Diet is it. But with all the magic pills, exercises and multi-marketing schemes out there promising a flat belly, how does a specific diet target belly fat?
Well, we found out. Read on, fit friend.
How the Flat Belly Diet Works
The Flat Belly Diet is centered around monounsaturated fats. The plan is pretty simple, with a daily intake of calories based on your age, weight and height (BMR), you should include one serving of monounsaturated fats with each meal.
The diet starts off with the most restrictive of the diet: a four-day anti-bloat plan that essentially is a complete clean eating plan with a max intake of daily calories at 1,200.
It allows four 300 calories meals you can pick from a list of approved foods. Most of the foods are meats and veggies. The book available also provides a recipe for a ‘sassy water’ that allegedly heals the GI tract. Like most ‘detox’ drinks it includes spices, leaves and veggies.
During this time you cannot have acidic foods at all, this includes salt and pepper, coffee and tea and the like.
After this four day ‘cleanse’ you start a four week plan of your daily caloric target divided by 4. So if you’re at 1,600 you’ll get three 400 calorie meals and a 400 calorie snack.
It contains ingredients such as ginger, cucumber and mint leaves. Off limits: alcohol, coffee, tea, hot cocoa and acidic fruit juices, chewing gum, fatty foods, salt, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, and anything seasoned with barbecue sauce, horseradish, garlic, chili pepper, black pepper or other spices.
The meals can include regular foods, but must include a serving of monounsaturated fats.
You also cannot consume more than 4 grams of saturated fat daily, cannot consume artificial sweeteners, trans fat, or exceed daily intake of salt.
So when you break it down, you’re eating much like the Mediterranean diet. Whole grains, veggies and lean meats.
Does the Flat Belly Diet Work?
We’d say the name is misleading, but since it is loosely based on the popular Mediterranean Diet which is more of a way of life than a diet, then yes, it should work. But we don’t’ think you should keep your hopes up that it will target your belly fat first, or only target belly fat. That’s not how weight loss works. It’s an all over loss. Yes, you will eventually lose in your belly area, but this diet doesn’t have any magic to it, it’s more about common sense. Eat good foods, avoid bad foods, eat in moderation. The only difference is that it highlights ‘good fats’.
If you decide to follow the plan to a T, there is an online membership for around $20 a month, and they have books for sale for additional cost.
