What is a Chelate Complex?
If you saw “chelate” on the side of your protein shake or supplement bottle and you’ve stumbled upon this note, we’ve got the answers to your burning questions.
Let’s talk about it.
Chelates and Chemistry: The Painless Version
Do you want the chemistry explanation or the simple summary?
That was rhetorical. Of course we need a little science.
Let’s dust off the old Britannica and start with the chemistry.
Don’t worry, this won’t hurt a bit.
A chelate is any class of complex compounds consisting of a central metal atom attached to a large molecule, called a ligand, in a cyclic or ring structure.
It looks like this:
See the ring?
Take a deep breath. That was about as hard as it will get.
Like food in our digestive system, let’s break it down.
Chelate Complexes Explained in a Less Complex Way
Chelate, pronounced “key-late” are minerals chemically attached to other molecules with the purpose of improving their absorption and use by the body.
So, for the supplement label you may have read, an amino acid chelated mineral is chemically joined by a mineral lab to other minerals or amino acids. There is evidence that many of these chelated compounds may improve mineral absorption by the body, allowing it to soak up and use more of the mineral that would otherwise be dissolved in your stomach acids.
We were intrigued, so we called on some friends at Albion Labs to break down their science. We were educated quite quickly on the benefits of chelate complexes.
Albion labs said that stable molecules like glutamine and creatine converts to waste in the stomach. Glutamine and Creatine are of great benefit to the body and muscles, so they knew they needed to stabilize it to get it through the burning acids of the stomach.
The scientists at Albion attached these minerals to magnesium to act as a carrier. The magnesium essentially shields the majority of these nutrients so they can make it through the acids, and to the digestive track where it can feast up on effective nutrients and send it them to the blood stream.
Nom Nom Nom.
So, with chelates, your body is not wasting minerals and you are not wasting your money.
That wasn’t so bad, was it?
