Why Do I Have Sore Muscles After Working Out?
What a pain…pain you get after working out that has you walking like the tinman before oil. It can be so unbearable at times you gotta skip the steps and sometimes—a workout.
Why is working out such a pain in the arse?

Why Do My Muscles Feel Sore After Exercise?
It can happen to anyone. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is muscle pain that shows up the next day or the day after working out. If you’ve ever killed a leg day, you know the worst pain is usually on the second day.
It might have you screaming “WHY DID WE EVER INVENT STAIRS!!”
But it can happen to anyone, even if you workout regularly. It’s actually a good thing. It occurs when you start a new training program or channel your inner beast—it’s your muscles saying WE GON’ GROW TODAY!
What Causes DOMS
A lot of people will say “It’s lactic acid” but actually, that’s not true. Lactic acid actually fights the pH imbalances that occur during acidic conditions caused by training. A buildup of lactic acid is an indicator that you’re going to be sore because of the presence of the acid that combats pH imbalance.
When you train, microscopic damage occurs in muscle fibers. That damage needs to be repaired and rebuilt before you feel better. When you perform any exercise you’re not used to, or at a higher intensity than you usually do, sore muscles after working out may be the results.
This is because the damage being caused to muscle cell membranes sets off an inflammatory response. The result is formation of metabolic waste products that stimulate nerve endings which cause pain. Inflammation and swelling is a result. Crying when you have to sit down on the toilet is also a result.
It happens more frequently to muscles that are being stretched while working out—like dreaded deadlift DOMS….OOooohh Feel the Burn. Or extreme contractions like loathsome lunges.
But don’t hate—sore muscles are great.
Why Having Sore Muscles after Working Out is Good
Sore muscles after working out means your body will repair and rebuild stronger muscles so you can adapt. After a while, the same exercise that had you wishing you could Hover Round your way through your day, won’t cause any pain in the future.
You’ll gain strength, endurance and power.
DOMS is a good indicator that you kicked ass in the gym.
