Is Stressing Over Your Weight Causing You To Gain MORE Weight?
Totally figures that the reason you might be gaining weight is because you’re stressing out about gaining weight. *ugheyeroll*
If you stay on top of our blogs, we stress STRESS when it comes to weight loss.
Stress can cause you to gain and hold onto weight. Period. It’s proven, supported, studied and relayed over and over again by all the smarties in white lab coats.
Think of it like how a woman wearing a dress might lift up her skirts and hold them close to her body as she steps over a puddle–That’s how stress affects your body. It grabs onto your fat like a big skirt and tucks it close into your body.
Studies Show the More You Stress About Weight, The More You Gain
OK, we’ll start with the bad news: the more you stress about your weight, the more you will gain. Studies back this up again and again.
This is completely separate from eating disorders, dieting attempts, binging etc. It is strictly how your MIND affects your body.
When you stress about these things, cortisol is released as a stresshormone response which causes your body to prepare for some imaginary battle it thinks you’re about to get into. You’re definitely in the battle of the bulge, but your body grabs onto that bulge like its ammunition.
You might think “How will I ever lose weight if I can’t stop thinking about losing weight”.
Don’t even approach it like that. In fact, just by reading that your body probably just injected you with some fat grabbing cortisol.
CHILL OUT, BODY!
PLUS, when you are stressed, your body will crave bad stuff like cookies and chips so that you can get a little lift from your happy hormones.
DON’T FALL FOR IT.
So, how can you lose weight and not think about losing weight?
A couple things:
Meditate to Lose Weight
Download an app or start taking yoga. Youtube how to clear your mind so you can start at the source. You need to destress that brain first and foremost.
Calming music, practice breathing, close your eyes and disconnect. Do this for 10 minutes a day.
Eat Good Foods that Make You Feel Good
Find the foods you love that are healthy and eat them when you want to eat cookies or chips. Your mind will be trained to reach for the nectarine over the chips, eventually.
Plus, if you eat right long enough, your hormones will stabilize, you won’t have general digestive issues associated with junk food and you might even lose some water weight to boot.
Preparing your meals the day before relieves the stress of trying to find healthy food at the last minute.
Prep them the night before so your brain can focus on non-food and weight related things.
Exercise to Relieve Stress, But Not Too Much
Exercise can be a great de-stressor, but it can also contribute to cortisol if you overdo it. Get 30-45 minutes a day in and call it.
Find fun activities to get your exercise in so you’re not focused on just exercising. Go biking, walking, play a game–just be active.
