Get Fit on Fish Oil: Fat In Equals Fat Out?
So you filled your cheat day filling your face with fatty foods and there may be an upside to it? Fat lovers rejoice! Indeed, there is irony in consuming fat to lose it, but it’s gotta be the right kind of fat.
Spoiler alert–No, it’s not the fat dripping from melted cheeses, or the butter that should be applied directly to hips or thighs. It’s the fatty acids in fish oil. Hmmm, somethin’ smells fishy about this….
Fish Oil Lowers Fatty Acids
Often associated with improving heart health, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and improving vascular health, supplementing with fish oil, or Omega-3, can also support improving fat loss. Fish oil possesses the ability to lower fatty acids in the blood your doctor calls triglycerides.
So where do the triglycerides go?
When we consume fats, excess fat is converted into fatty acids and stored as triglycerides and carried through your blood in packages called lipoproteins.
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly Cholesterol
“Good” cholesterol is tucked inside high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and bad cholesterol is placed in low-density lipoproteins (LDL.) Triglycerides are transported inside very-low-density lipoproteins, or VLDL. VLDL are important couriers, as they deliver these triglycerides to muscles to convert into energy through ATP. But excess triglycerides are stored as, you guessed it, fat. In your liver or fat cells, they wait to be called to the energy war.
Fish Oil Reduces Fat Storage
The process is a little more complex than that. Fish oil lowers triglyceride levels and fat storage by decreasing the production of VLDL and increasing the amount of VLDL eliminated from your body. Less VLDL means the patient fat sitting in cells or your liver can be called into action, converted to energy and removed from your saddlebags.
Fatty acids are transported to the mitochondria, or fuel station of the cell, where they are oxidized to create adenosine triphosphate, commonly referred to as “ATP” or energy. There fat is burned as fuel. Whoa, wait–whaaat?
Simplified: More fish oil = less fat. Thanks fish!
