What is Garcinia Cambogia
Garcinia cambogia is a fruit native to Indonesia that when added to meals can increase satiety and fullness or rather, suppress the appetite.
Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) extracted from garcinia cambogia is the active ingredient in weight loss claims.
HCA primarily works by blocking an enzyme called citrate lyase that the body uses to turn carbs into fat.
HCA also increases serotonin levels which improves mood and helps those with unhealthy food relationships—break up with their food, replacing it with an improved mood.
Studies do show if you have a healthy diet and exercise regularly, if you take Garcinia cambogia, it can help with weight loss. But how much, and how accurate is that?
The Truth About Garcinia Cambogia
Well, studies say—not that much. And be prepared to experience a bit of stomach discomfort while you’re at it.
This study reviewed all available qualifying studies on garcinia cambogia. The results were conflicting. Some showed only placebo groups lost weight, others showed garcina cambogia caused weight GAIN.
The study summed up its findings stating, “The evidence from RCTs suggests that Garcinia extracts/HCA generate weight loss on the short term. However, the magnitude of this effect is small, is no longer statistically significant when only rigorous RCTs are considered, and its clinical relevance seems questionable.”
Like most claims, they can be made with just one small insignificant study supporting their statements. But when you look more deeply, you find the claims are weak at best—and you’d have a better shot at willing pounds away with your mind.
