What is the Acid Alkaline Diet?
Replacing “Atkins” and “Low Carb” diets is now the Acid Alkaline Diet. In recent years, pH levels in the body are being linked to other issues like inflammatory conditions and even obesity.
The Acid Alkaline Diet aims to prevent disease, reverse inflamed states and conditions and improve health with a side of weight loss.
Sounds nice, doesn’t it? But does it work? That’s what we wanted to know. So we did some diggin’.
Let’s hop in, shall we?
The Acid Alkaline Diet Basics
Grab your beakers and your high school memories, because science class is in session, my friend.
We often hear pH but do you know what it is? It stands for ‘potential hydrogen’ and basically means the ability to attract hydrogen atoms.
In other words, pH measures acids and alkalies in the body. The scale you might recall from school is 0-14. The lower the number, the more acidic. Our bodies overall are slightly alkaline with a pH of around 7.4.
So, how does this relate to the diet?
The claim is that when we eat acidic foods it can disrupt our bodies’ pH which affects nearly all functions reliant on our natural alkaline state. It causes inflammation, disease, and a system working overtime to ‘cure’ the acidic state.
How do we fix it? Eat alkalizing foods, of course!
The Acid Alkaline Diet Foods
Studies show a healthy diet like the Acid Alkaline diet reduces acid and preserves muscle mass. So what are these foods, you say?
- Beans and Legumes
- Nuts (some)
- Sprouted grains
- Veggies (heavy emphasis on the green, leafy kind)
- Alcohol & Caffeine
- Processed or Foods
- Grains (non-sprouted)
- Meats (moderate if you’re not a vegetarian- but note-it is strictly forbidden in the AD)
- Sugary foods
If you’re not a big list fan, we included a picture of foods by pH level. You’re welcome.
Your foods should be 80% alkalizing and 20% acid-forming.
In addition, you should also take a look at your lifestyle. Drinking alcohol, smoking, stimulants, working out too much or too little can also impact pH levels.
Will I lose Weight on the Acid Alkaline Diet?
Sure, any diet that steers you toward good foods is a good choice for weight loss. But recall—this diet’s main focus is to restore your health—weight loss is just a secondary benefit. But, as with any good diet that isn’t restrictive and focuses on good foods—you’re bound to enjoy weight loss while improving your health.
